Ah, the restart button.
A button we could press literally any time of the year, season, hour or day. But for some reason – it’s pressed quite vigorously at the start of a new year…right now. And man – it feels good.
I started my refresh in December, a bit early before all the 2018 mantras, goals, and resolutions started pouring out of podcasts, blogs, magazine and Instagram stories. So yep, I got a head start on a shiny new refresher and I couldn’t wait to share the deets with you. How do I refresh? I found easy ways to get rid of the excess, any build up that was holding me back in 2017, and cleaning out the old to make way for the new. Here’s how to get started.
- Clean out the inbox with Unroll.me – The inbox (dun dun dun), was quite literally the death of my mental health in 2017 (ha! seriously, though). My biggest issue is that retailers find my email account, and sign me up for all their newsletters without me asking (not the key to my heart if you ask me). I received somewhere between 300-400 emails a day in 2017. What did I do? Unroll.me – this service allows you to unsubscribe from ALL your emails (the ones you choose, of course) within seconds. This service doesn’t cost a penny and it really does work – tested and used by yours truly.
- Back up your computers – You are fixing two problems here. 1. Preventing yourself from losing everything (photos, written work, notes, documents, school work, EVERYTHING) on your computers. 2. Keeping that computer running so fresh, so fast, so clean come 2018. The way I do this? I bought this 1 TB storage drive from amazon, and just simply dragged and dropped everything that I wanted to store safe and sound onto it. Unplugged it, stored it in my desk drawer and voila.
- Hit the unfollow button – I’m talking to you – Instagram. This can also go for Facebook (or Pinterest), but I have genuinely noticed that the visual media that I’m seeing on a daily basis – is affecting what I’m thinking, how I’m performing my job, how I’m feeling, and how I’m spending my free time. Following certain people can cause #fomo, comparison, or may not cause any of those at all – they may just be spammy and their season is over with you. I challenge you to only follow and expose yourself to media that lifts you up, motivates you to becoming a better you.
- Schedule off-time as a to-do: – I’m not sure what this looks like for you, but for me – I was over exhausting myself come December. I simply didn’t know how to rest, schedule in R+R, and was mixing work into personal life (drawing a line between work and personal is a huge challenge for me personally). Taking a break off of social media was my key to rest, and boy it did the trick. Taking 6-7 days off of posting felt like a God-send, especially because I felt more present in the physical world instead of living in a social-media reality. Because this was so rewarding, I am going to make an effort to continue to schedule this kind of off-time every 90 days or so.
- Tackle the closet (come on you can do it!) – A messy closet most definitely weighs me down, especially when I know that someone in need could be wearing the clothes (instead of them laying on the floor.) I’ve laid out a step-by-step process on how I clean out my closet here and have gotten so much good feedback on this post. (Also while you’re at it, try cleaning out your makeup bag + giving those makeup brushes a deep cleanin’.)
I wanted to keep this post short and sweet, so it didn’t overwhelm you! But I’ve gone through all 5 steps in the last few weeks and you bethcha, these babies work.
